Teaching Opportunities

There are two types of programs described here -- three that hire recent graduates to assist in English language instruction in France, Japan or Spain, and a number that assist recent graduates to obtain education degrees and teach in high-need schools/areas across the United States.

English Language Instruction Abroad Placements

Japan Exchange and teaching (JET) Program

This program places new graduates in elementary, junior and senior high schools throughout Japan to assist in English language education. Click on "Aspiring JETs." November deadline; check website for exact date.

North American Language and Culture Assistants in Spain

This program supports recent graduates to work as English language assistant teachers. Check site for deadline.

Teaching Assistant Program in France

This program offers teaching assistant positions in French schools. Applicants must be proficient in French. They teach 12 hours of English conversation classes per week; this is a 6 – 9 month position. Deadline is end of January.

Knowles Science Teaching Foundation Teaching Fellowships

The KSTF Teaching Fellowship is for beginning science and math teachers as they earn a teaching credential and through the early years of their career. Recipients receive financial and professional support (tuition assistance, a monthly stipend, and summer support) for up to five years while enrolled in a teacher credential program and during the first few years of teaching. Applicants should be enrolled in, or planning to enroll in, an approved teaching credential program and plan to teach biological science, chemistry, earth science, mathematics, physical sciences, or physics, at any high school in the U.S. Individuals who are not U.S. citizens are eligible to apply, but they must be committed to teaching science or math in U.S. high schools. Complete information and application materials are on the KSTF site, www.kstf.org. The application deadline is mid-January.

Math for America (MfA) Fellowship Program

Recipients receive a full tuition scholarship to obtain a Master’s degree in Education and make a commitment to teach secondary school math in one of several cities -- for 2009 they include New York City, Los Angeles, and San Diego (these may change from year to year). Deadlines vary by city, the earliest is mid-February.

Mississippi Teacher Corps

A two-year program that recruits college graduates to teach in the Mississippi Delta or Jackson. Designed for non-education majors, it offers a number of benefits (among them a full scholarship for a master’s degree in education) and the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of students in one of the poorest areas of the country. There is a series of deadlines; the first one is in mid-October and the last in mid-March.

New York City Teaching Fellows

A two- to three-year program during which the participant teaches in a New York City pubic school and works on a subsidized Master’s degree. Three deadlines -- late October, early December, and early January (it is best to apply early).

Teach for America

This is a national corps of recent college graduates of all majors who commit two years to teach in urban and rural public schools across the country. Five deadlines -- August, September, November, January, and February (it is best to apply early).

Woodrow Wilson Indiana Teaching Fellowship

This program seeks to recruit college graduates to teaching in science, technology, engineering and math (the STEM fields) in high-need secondary schools.The program will include a master’s degree program at one of four universities in Indiana.  Fellows will commit to teach math or science in Indiana for three years upon completing the master’s degree. Deadline is in mid-December.
